Here are some pictures of some of the big books that I have made and used in my classroom. I do not have credit for many of the poems and songs. If you know where these came from, email me so I can give credit. When available, there is a link to download the text in Microsoft Word.

Five Little Fishies

I turned this Dr. Jean song into a Big Book. It is on her CD, Dr. Jean Sings Silly SongsI found fish clip art that I printed and glued onto the page. *You can also make this book interactive by putting Velcro on these or foam fish and letting the students attach them.

I See A Circus

Often, the graphics inspire me to make a predictable big book. I used the "I see..." pattern and circus themed graphics from Carson Dellosa for this book.

What Is A Pet?

I found a bulletin board set on clearance and decided to use it for a predictable big book. I used the predictable sentence "What is a pet? A ___ is a pet." with the appropriate picture of the pet. *You can also make this book interactive by putting Velcro on the pets instead of gluing them down. Pass them out to the children and let them attach the pet.

Brilliant Butterflies

I used the Ellison machine to make a die cut for each page. I put all colors of butterflies on the cover and last page of the book and the correct color of butterfly on the appropriate page. *You can also make this book interactive by putting Velcro on the butterflies instead of gluing them down. Pass them out to the children and let them put on the butterfly that fits the clue.

Pond Peek A Boo Pond Book

I created the graphics for this book with Microsoft Clip Art. The book is predictable and the order does not matter.  I made it into a "Peek A Boo" book with holes to give a clue about what the next animal will be. Cut out words. Color and cut pond pictures. On cover, glue title at the top and words “Who lives at the pond?” at the bottom. Cut out a hole.  On the next page, position and glue first picture to show part of the animal (enough to give a clue) through the hole. Glue the words “A ____ lives at the pond.” at the top. Glue the words “Who lives at the pond?” at the bottom of the page. Cut a hole. On the next page, position and glue the second picture to show part of the animal through the hole. Continue with all animals. Laminate and bind book.

Peek a Boo Ocean Book

This book is similar to the Peek a Boo Pond Book. I found the pictures in the book I Can Make It! I Can Read It! Summer. The book is predictable and the order does not matter. I made it into a "Peek A Boo" book with holes to give a clue about what the next animal will be. I cut out the words and colored/cut out the ocean animal pictures. On cover, glue title "Peek a Boo Ocean Book" at the top and words "Peek a boo! I see you.  Who lives in the sea?”. Cut out a hole.  On the next page, position and glue first picture to show part of the animal (enough to give a clue) through the hole. Glue the words “A ____ lives in the ocean.” at the top. Glue the words “Peek a boo! I see you.  Who lives in the sea?” at the bottom of the page. Cut a hole. On the next page, position and glue the second picture to show part of the animal through the hole. Continue with all animals. Laminate and bind.

Community Helper Clues

I found the pictures and clues in the book 100 Riddles Poems for Pocket Charts. Cut poster board in half. Color and cut out the pictures and occupation. Glue in 2 rows onto the poster board. Cut 2nd half of the poster board into strips. Careful to line up with pictures, glue clues onto the strips. Laminate board and strips. Tape strips onto the board, covering the pictures. Cut upward on strip to create small “flip book clues” over each picture. Laminate and Velcro flaps shut.

Who Lives At the Zoo?

I found the words and graphics in the I Can Make It, I Can Read It series from the Mailbox magazine. I cut out the words and glued them to the construction paper. I colored and cut out each animal. Attach the animals to the appropriate page to the page with Velcro squares. Before reading, I pass out the animals. While reading, students attach animal to book in sequential order.
