Here are some pictures of some of the big books that I have made and used
in my classroom. I do not have credit for many of the poems and songs. If
you know where these came from,
email me so I can give
credit. When available, there is a link to download the text in Microsoft
Word.

Who Let the Letters Out?
This book is based
on the Dr. Jean song to the
tune of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" (on her CD
Kiss Your
Brain). The book is in the shape of a dog house. I wrote
lowercase letters on small red dog notepads and capital letters on
large red dog notepads. I glued down the small sheets and laminated
the book. I used Velcro to attach the large, laminated dogs to the
book. As we sing the song, I take the dog out of the doghouse.
Afterwards, I pass out the dogs to the students. We sing the song
again and students put the dogs back in the dog house.

Five Fat
Turkeys
I used the Ellison
machine to make a die cut for each page.
The cover and first page each have 5 turkeys (I colored their
gobblers, beaks, and eyes for added details.). The second page has
five turkeys in a tree (I drew it as a background on the page.) The
third page has a pilgrim hat, the fourth page has an empty tree, and
the last page has the five turkeys again. *You can make this Big
Book interactive by laminating the turkey pieces separately and
attaching them to the appropriate pages with Velcro.

Who is in the
big red barn?
I created this big
book using farm animal notepads including: a sheep, a duck, a
turkey, a horse, a pig, a chick, a hen, a cow, and a goat. I cut the
paper in the shape of a barn, outlining the roof with a strip of
white paper. The book is a predictable sentence "I see a (animal) in
the big red barn."

Numeral Fun
The pictures for
this book are so easy- I just enlarged a numeral and printed it in
color! I had large numerals decorating the front. Add the text to
the bottom of each page and this Big Book is done! *You can
change the words from "numeral" to "number".

Who Likes Mud?
This is an
enlarged mini reproducible book from the teacher resource, I Can
Make It! I Can Read It! Summer, published by The Education
Center. I simply enlarged this book to 11 x 14 paper, trimmed,
colored, and laminated. I read this book during the Farm unit while
we are reading Mrs. Wishy Washy. We also create our own predictable
chart about "Who Likes Mud?"

Old Mrs. Davis Had A Farm
My aunt sewed
stuffed farm animals and a cloth barn shaped bags. I took
photographs and used these to create a Big Book. The cover has me
holding up the barn. The text is the words to the song "Old
MacDonald"- I just changed the name to Old Mrs. Davis! My kids LOVE
any book that has a photo of me- even if it is one when I was having
a REALLY bad hair day!!!

Colorful Thanksgiving Turkeys
Brown Bear, Brown
Bear is a predictable book that many of your students already know.
I use this pattern to create several big books, including Colorful
Turkeys. I copied a turkey body pattern on brown construction paper.
Then I copied feather patterns on colored construction paper. I
created a rainbow feathered turkey for the cover. To emphasize the
color word, I outlined it with the appropriate color of marker.
Then I glued the words, turkeys & their feathers on the page. The
colors I used includes: red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple,
pink, black, and brown.

Concept Books
Since I am in an
open room, I do not have the wall space to hang up concept posters.
Plus, when they are hanging on the wall, I did not use them as often
and they lose meaning to the children. I turn these concept (colors,
months, numbers, letters) posters into big books. I also do the same
thing with nursery rhyme posters. After laminating, I bind them on
the side. On the Month Book, I use an erasable marker to write the
names of the children that have their birthday during that month.

If You're Happy and You Know It
I used the lyrics
from this song and clip art to create a Big Book to sing along with.
The "happy" pages have a smiling face. The "clap your hands" pages
have clapping hands. The "stomp your feet" pages have a pair of
feet. The "shout hooray" pages have a cheerleader. It is an easy
book that many of your children will already know!

Who Am I?
I found the graphics in the 2002
Oct/Nov Preschool issue of the Mailbox magazine. I wrote the words
on sentence strips, writing the color words in appropriate colors. I
cut the color words out of the sentence and set them to the side. I
glued the remaining sentence to the page and the appropriate
graphic. I glued the entire monster face on the last page of the
book. I attached the color words to the book with Velcro.
